About us

For almost 30 years, the University of Applied Sciences (FHDW) has been a state-recognised and economically independent educational partner. The roots of the FHDW lie in teaching and practical exchange with companies. But our research is steadily growing stronger, and our projects provide important impulses for the degree programmes and our corporate partners. The FHDW consistently aligns its research activities with the needs of practice and receives impetus from its close involvement with the business community. The scientific topics range from production and process optimisation to the working world of tomorrow, environmental protection, facility management and also disaster control.

Starting August 2026 (subject to project approval and funding), we are looking for a Senior Research Scientist (m/f/d). In this role, you'll participate in the acquisition of projects, design of software solutions and management of – parts of – our dynamic research team. You will be actively engaged in projects with partners at the intersection of data science, robotics, and AI.

Your tasks

  • Active and independent engagement in the complete lifecycle of research and transfer projects
  • Project and/or Team lead
  • Design and (initial) implementation of complex software architectures including AI systems
  • Apply creativity to devise novel solutions and leverage methodological freedom to drive innovation for research partners
  • Collaborate closely with project partners from business and research
  • Thrive on independent and responsible work
  • Contribute to expanding research activities and represent the FHDW research brand externally

Your profile

  • Passionate about computer science and dedicated to impactful research activities
  • Strong communication skills (orally and in writing)
  • Committed to teamwork with internal and external partners
  • High personal responsibility, motivation, and a hands-on mentality
  • Experience in leading complex development projects and in designing software architectures
  • Expertise in object recognition and image segmentation; experience with the integration of software components into robotic systems
  • Proficient in Python or other programming languages, data science, machine learning and algorithm design, with a willingness to learn and expand expertise
  • Successfully completed a Master's degree in (applied) computer science (or a comparable degree)
  • At least C1 level in German. Fluent English language (speaking, reading and writing).

Our offer

  • Project-based position, subject to project approval and funding; expected 3-year contract with possible extension
  • Varied and demanding tasks in a growing research sector
  • Structured onboarding, mentor support and fast decision-making processes
  • Freedom for professional development, leadership and opportunities for further professional growth and training
  • Competitive salary (€4000-4500 gross/month for master's graduates)
  • 32 days' holiday
  • Flexible working hours and remote work options
  • Supportive and collegial work atmosphere
  • Assistance with relocation to Germany (remote work transition phase possible)
  • Potential for publications and presentations at international conferences
